Blueberry and Friends

Morgan came home with five Monarch caterpillars and we put them in a bug carrier. Two days later, four of the five had transformed into their chrysalis' (this happened sometime when no one was looking between breakfast and lunch). Two days later while we were hosting a party the chrysalis' were shaken from their hanging position. That night I researched what to do. Determined and desperate I ended up hot gluing the chrysalis' back to a hanging position but was only able to salvage two.
A week or so later, we now have two beautiful, delicate and damaged Monarch butterflies! The wings of these beautifully metamorphosised creatures are weak and sad. "Blueberry" is the strongest but I don't think she will make much progress in her 8 week life. They currently sit in a potted plant on the deck, flapping their wings, but unable to fly. I think they might have to disappear sometime when no one is looking between breakfast and lunch!
A neat experience and hands on learning process, but maybe we shouldn't mess with mother nature? I think I still would have glued them up determined to salvage their delicate life. Their chrysalis' were so amazing with greenish sparkly nuggets in them, and wow - a caterpillar to a butterfly, really?  Amazing!

.....  A couple hours later.....  there are no butterflies on the deck.... Farewell!

LOL about the disappearances when nobody is looking.

Abigail has had the same confrontation with (insect) death in her classroom. It is sad, but I guess it's all educational.
