Schuyler can not get enough of the Tinker Bell and Barbie Mariposa movies. She also received a really neat, interactive, 3D book for her birthday The Hidden World of Fairies which she loves to read. A friend burned some audio fairy books which she loves to listen to, and when she is on the computer it is usually on Pixie Hollow. When you delve into the world of fairies it really is another world. With this in mind, the questions she has been asking me lately are: Do you believe in fairies, do you believe in Peter Pan, do you believe in Captain Hook, do you really need two hands on the Dragon scale (from Dragon Tales)????? How am I supposed to respond to these questions? She seems to really believe in the fairies, but she said she didn't believe in Captain Hook (maybe since he is the villain?). She even says that she sees fairies. If I say I don't believe then what would the Tooth Fairy, Santa and the Easter Bunny have to say? Is it an acceptable white lie to say that I do indeed believe? Even if I said I do believe, I am sure she could read through my apprehensive answers. I love that she has this mythical imagination and I wouldn't want to jeopardize that. An imagination is something I never had, which is probably what makes this topic challenging! I am open for suggestions!

Heather,
Sloan as told me things that she "sees" and I told her that I believe that she believes she sees them. So you aren't lying by saying you've seen them but reinforcing that you believe that she is using her imagination. :)
So, what's the difference between fairies, Santa & pretend friends? I had 3 pretend friends when I was a little girl, Janet, Ginger & Changer. In time we moved and my pretend friends went away. I have fond memories of them. I played with them when I had no one else to play with. What about Angels? You don't have to see them to believe in them. I think your friend is right. She does see fairies...for now...and it's precious. Like the sleigh bell in Polar Express in time people stop hearing the sound of the bell. How wonderful a sound it is when you can hear it! Some people see fairies and others don't. She'll stop seeing fairies but she'll always remember when she did see them. That's wonderful!
