Typhoid or Kidney infection?

We had a recent scare with Schuyler where the doctors thought she might have had typhoid or a kidney infection (they were even on the phone with the center for disease control). It turns out there was nothing wrong (sigh of relief) and it really was just a big scare.

Basically she had a fever on and off for ten days with no other symptoms. We finally took her to the doctor who also saw no symptoms, but put her on a 10 day antibiotic anyway. Five days after finishing the antibiotic the random and very persistent fever returned with no other symptoms. The fever would range from a temperature of 101 to the high 103s, and would sometimes be everyday, or every other day. After several more days of the fever I took her to her pediatrician (the first visit was a local general doctor). Their concern was that there were no other symptoms, and that the two incidents were related.

After ruling out several bacteria infections they sent her for a ultrasound to look at her kidneys and other organs. And after asking random questions about jail visits, being out of the country, and being in contact with any reptiles, they sent her for more in depth blood work to look for salmonella (would you believe that the nurses messed up and had to draw blood from both arms?). Do you remember the turtle 'Clara' that we housed for about two weeks?

After all the tests came back clear it was determined that the two incidents were not related and that she must have just had two viral infections (colds).

Schuyler really dislikes the doctor as you may remember from the Trauma or Drama post, so this whole process involved lots and lots of resistance and crying. She missed several days of school over the whole deal, and needless to say it was a very trying and draining time.

We are so relieved and thankful that she is okay! During this time, however, I couldn't help thinking about (and being very emotional about) so many families that really do have very sick children and what the children, parents, and families must go through. It is unimaginable.

Oh man. I've been behind on my blog reading, and now it's pink vomit followed by scary fevers. Yikes. I hope you have a peaceful stretch next, Heather.

As soon as you said reptiles the first thing I thought of was the turtle. I'm glad to hear that Schuyler didn't pick up any strange disease or have a kidney infection and that everything turned out just fine. So, they just think she had a couple of viruses? Hmmmm...I would have thought she was fighting something bacterial with the fevers. What matters most is that the little one's are just fine! Happy to hear it. I love the fact that Morgan was all set to have more candy as early as she was!!!! Kids are resilient!
