In Rhode Island recycling wasn't really a choice. The sanitation department provided you with blue and green containers, and they had strict guidelines on many things like throwing away card board or carpet. It had to be cut a certain size and bundled just perfect with a really pretty bow on top or they wouldn't take it. It was a lot of work. One time we just put the stuff out there with a six pack (and a pretty bow) in hopes they would take the trash as it was - of course that worked! In Point Venture, TX - not so easy! We have to do our own recycling. We have to collect it, and then take it up the street and sort it. When we first moved here I felt really guilty that we were not recycling (ok, not so guilty or I would have started recycling sooner). Well, my New Years Resolution was to start recycling again. It took me a couple of weeks to get a system down, but after that it was great! It is fun for the kids to go to the recycling center and help! Our trash was reduced by about 1/3 each week, and it just feels good to do our part!
Along the same lines, and to toot my own horn........ Some of you may know I am on the board of the PTA (might have mentioned it before). I write the monthly newsletter that goes to all the student families! One of our fundraisers is to sell t-shirts and with Earth Day coming up we wanted a "green" t-shirt. There were three designs that we voted on, and I wasn't a fan of any of them, so one night I worked on an idea that I had. My shirt won the next vote and is now for sale at the school!!!
